Thanks for joining me on this blog – I’ve had ideas swirling around my head about the way this economy has been run and the effect its having on society in the UK and particularly the younger generation and now I want to share those thoughts. I want it to be a positive blog, and show that there can be changes.
This blog is going to look at other countries and see what they are doing to tackle the problem. Its going to look at influential people who are waking up to a similar conclusion and share their thoughts. Its going to look at current economics and suggest changes. Its going to look at the problems caused on society.
The problem as I see it is that the the wealth gap in the UK has got wider. The wealth distribution is unfair and this is making it difficult for young people to enjoy the benefits that earlier generations have enjoyed.
For the younger generation it seems a bit like joining a game of monopoly two hours after the start, all the property has been bought and owned and now you can just rent and work.
This generation are giving up on the idea of home ownership and all the stability that can give you in terms of raising a family in the future, in terms of owning a property in your retirement and not having to pay rent.
In the 1900’s 10% of the population owned about 90% of the wealth. A couple of world wars changed this and a middle class evolved. Wealth was distributed more evenly. This is now in reverse and if nothing changes we are facing a rush back to the 1900s in terms of wealth distribution in the UK.
The wealth gap is stark as the richest 10% of the population own 45% of the wealth currently in the UK. The poorest 50% own just 8.7% of the wealth.
My goal is that this blog will be shared particularly amongst young people. When economic statements are made I would like to ‘unpick’ them so that they are accessible and understandable. Economics is not a black box that can not be understood. It should be an area that people are passionate about because its affecting every day life and futures.
Don’t let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on the big inequities. It will be one of the great experiences of your lives,” Bill Gates said in a Harvard University commencement speech.
